Creating Influence

Growing Credit Union Grassroots

It is vital for credit unions to foster relationships with legislators of all types and tenure. As such, there is much effort dedicated toward developing and maintaining strong connections for credit unions. In addition to the meetings with State Sen. William Ligon (R-Brunswick) on June 6th and U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-11) on June 1st, here are more grassroots connections made on behalf of the industry in the past few weeks:

  • On May 30th GCUA and Peach State FCU sat down with U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall (R-7) and his key staff to discuss issues in Congress. The dialogue ranged from the credit union tax exemption, the CHOICE Act, and the political environment in Washington, D.C.
  • On May 26th GCUA met with state Rep. David Wilkerson (D-Austell) to discuss the state session, and potential upcoming bills regarding mortgage lending. In addition, much dialogue focused on the likely changes ahead in the Legislature with the multiple representatives and senators seeking to run for governor, lieutenant governor, and secretary of state.
  • In addition to in-person meetings, opportunities to engage with legislators in a variety of forums are sought to help grow the level of influence for the industry. From June 7th through June 9th GCUA connected with state legislators and various business industry representatives through the Georgia Chamber legislative meeting. During the meeting GCUA grew the relationships for the industry with a wide variety of legislators, and heard insight from the top elected officials tasked with leading the state.
