Elections: Early Voting for Runoffs Under Way

In Georgia, early voting for the primary runoff is now open as of this week. While there are several races under way across the state, the most media attention has been on the three statewide contests to see which Republican candidate will move forward to the November general elections. These are:

  • Casey Cagle and Brian Kemp, who are running against each other to be the Republican candidate in the governor’s race against Stacey Abrams (D)
  • Geoff Duncan and David Shafer, who are running against each other to be the Republican candidate in the lieutenant governor’s race against Sara Riggs Amico (D)
  • David Bell Isle and Brad Raffensperger, who are running against each other to be the Republican candidate for the secretary of state’s race against John Barrow (D)

Runoffs typically have dismal voter turnout, and even with a governor’s race on the ticket, the likelihood is that the actual voting percentage will not be high. Please encourage your staff and board to vote – and if they are not able to cast a ballot on the actual election day of July 24th, share this link to see where and when to vote early, or to request an absentee ballot. There are many other races other than the above three statewide that will be determined (and some decided outright due to lack of competition in the general). Be sure to vote in the runoffs!

But not sure how voting in these July runoffs work? Here are answers to common questions:

  • Do I even have a race in the primary runoff? If you voted in the Republican primary, the answer is YES (and you may have more races than the three statewide). If you voted in the Democratic primary, the answer is MAYBE as you may have several runoff races to be decided. Please follow the steps below to find out.
  • I voted in the Democratic primary, can I now vote in the Republican primary runoff? The answer is NO. If you voted in the Democratic primary, you can only vote in the Democratic runoff … but while there’s no statewide races to be decided, still check your ballot as there are several active races underway for both parties.
  • I didn’t vote in the primary at all, can I vote in the runoff? YES! You can vote in either Republican or Democratic primary.

To see if you have any races to be decided in the runoff elections, please click HERE, enter your personal information to access your My Voter Page, and then click on the link towards the left under the “Voter Information” area that states “Click Here for Sample Ballots.” Select either Republican or Democrat ballot to see which races will be decided by the likely few that vote by July 24th.
