Credit Union Grassroots: It Pays to Be Prepared

Much like the tools, information and planning ahead for a successful summer outing of camping, it pays to be just as prepared with credit union grassroots.  It takes forethought and strategy to be in the right situation to gain as much insight on the upcoming issues, as well as the time and effort educating and engaging legislators, credit union leaders, and key political players to craft the type of relationships necessary to shape legislation.  Some of the most recent grassroots efforts in addition to the June 23rd meeting with state Representative Meagan Hanson (R-Brookhaven) were:

  • On June 23rd GCUA was at the state Capitol for the House Science and Technology summer hearing on intellectual property. The state legislature holds a variety of hearings throughout the off session, and are often a place where issues are decided … before a bill is even introduced.  GCUA will continue to engage these summer hearings to ensure that credit unions are positioned well for the 2018 session; the next one scheduled is on the topic of tax exemptions.
  • On June 29th GCUA was invited to participate in a private event for lobbyists and legislators hosted by one of the major legal consulting lobbying firms. These large firms represent a wide variety of clients, and GCUA often finds itself lobbying against them on different issues.  As such, it’s important to have inroads for clear and honest communication … as who is your lobbying “foe” on one issue will likely be a collaboration partner on another issue!
  • On July 6th GCUA met with Ann Purvis, General Counsel for the Senate President Pro Tem’s office to discuss the upcoming session. With grassroots, it’s important to have a wide number of relationships with not just legislators, but with the individuals tasked with shaping the opinions of these legislators (anyone who has been to the Washington DC Hike the Hill and has met with legislative aides instead of the Congressman knows precisely how these individuals play a key role).

On the horizon are more legislative connections, more hike at homes, and more summer hearings.  Stay tuned!
