Creating Influence

Grassroots Influence: Get to Know Your Legislator

While much attention this year is on the elections, who’s running, who has the most eye-grabbing ad on TV, or what different segments of the population and political persuasions think may happen …

… at the end of the day, what matters to credit unions is having elected leaders who understand what makes our industry unique and are supportive of policies that help you serve your members today and into the future. And these individuals are not bound by party or section of the state. Being a credit union supporter is truly a bipartisan, rural, suburban and urban effort!

All of us have our own political preferences, but it’s important for credit unions to have the individuals elected to serve (regardless of party) develop positive connections with the industry, understand what a not-for-profit financial cooperative is, and see how the credit unions in their districts help people afford life. Growing the understanding that all legislators have of the industry helps make a positive impact on the issues addressed in Washington, D.C., with Congress, and under the Gold Dome in Atlanta.

Here are some avenues for your credit union to help make a difference by growing connections:

  • Invite elected leaders to your credit union branch openings, celebrations, annual meetings.
  • Engage area elected leaders at a local credit union chapter event.
  • Send a personal note to your legislators thanking them for their time representing the district, identifying yourself as with your credit union.
  • Participate with local civic/chamber meetings.
  • Connect with legislators through the Hike the Hill/Hike at Home meetings with GCUA.
  • Engage in campaign activity where credit unions are involved.
  • Develop your own, unique personal relationships with area legislators – and ensure that they know your credit union!

Credit unions all across Georgia do a wonderful job at the above and their efforts are regularly highlighted in Creating Influence; thank you for making it a priority for your organization! We encourage everyone to engage with their legislators – it is easy to do, but has a high return on effort for your credit union.
