State Legislature Gearing Up for January

The state Legislature convenes on January 14th. However, there have been multiple hearings in the weeks leading up to the end of the year ranging from workforce needs, transit funding, rural development, healthcare, and low-THC oil – and then the Biennial Institute that serves as the “jump start” for both new and veteran legislators for the coming year. One study committee of note to credit unions wrapped up its analysis on December 5th with its final hearing – the House Study Committee on Real Property Taxation, which was tasked with reviewing the property tax system in Georgia.

The committee, chaired by Rep. Andy Welch (R-McDonough) , provided eight recommendations that the Legislature may tackle in 2019. The recommendations focused on the appeal and assessment process, with focus on transparency. However, this topic will continue to be monitored closely into the session, where it may change into any manner of tax issue touching real property. Stay tuned!
