In District Credit Union Connection with Key Freshman Legislator

On June 23rd state Representative Meagan Hanson (R-Brookhaven) toured Delta Community Credit Union’s branch in her district for an indoctrination of what the industry is, and what’s important to them legislatively.  This tour was held to grow her understanding of the industry and create a positive connection; Rep. Hanson is a freshman legislator who serves on the Judiciary Committee in the House, one of importance to credit unions.

The Judiciary Committee consistently addresses bills that matter to credit unions (such as foreclosure issues, lending issues, etc.) and was pivotal in the passage of the credit union priority bill in 2017 to help protect the personal liability level of board members (Board Member Protection/Business Judgement Bill HB 192).  This was the legislation lobbied heavily by GCUA, banking trade associations, business associations, along with the Department of Banking and Finance and Secretary of State’s office to strengthen the protections of board members against charges of “ordinary negligence” in the decision-making process.

Rep. Hanson was very active and helpful towards credit unions in securing successful passage of this board member protections bill in not just the full Committee but on the subcommittee where the bill languished for 9 hours of hearings.  After the session, she was designated as a key individual to build a relationship with for the future.  Our thanks to Delta Community CU for sharing their space and time with her, and helping illustrate how credit unions across Georgia help people afford life.
