Growing Connections and Understanding: Two Congressmen Meet with Credit Unions

Engaging and building relationships with legislators is a key component to Advocacy, and as such there is consistent effort to connect credit unions with elected leaders. When legislators know the industry personally, it places an in-district face on the issues and creates a level of context – and this is created in a systematic manner. Here are some of the most recent grassroots connections made on behalf of the industry in the past two weeks:

  • On August 7th U.S. Rep. Rick Allen (R-12) met with Health Center CU in the district to see firsthand how they help their members and learn more about the impact of the industry. Rep. Allen serves on both the House Committee on Agriculture as well as the House Education and Workforce Committee, two committees important to the economic future of the state.
  • On August 8th U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall (R-7) met with multiple credit union branches in his district, sitting down with Delta Community CU, Georgia United CU, and Peach State FCU, and as of press time also meeting with Associated CU. Rep. Woodall serves on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, the House Budget Committee, and the House Committee on Rules (which decides what bills go to the House floor for a vote). Rep. Woodall is chairman of the Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process of this powerful committee. And While Rep. Woodall has a good understanding of what credit unions do, it’s important to continue to engage and share the industry message.

Our thanks to these two Congressmen for their interest in the industry and appreciation for what credit unions do to help people afford life and achieve their financial goals.
