Grassroots: Building Long-Term Connections with Legislators

Brass
State Sen. Matt Brass, second from left, with Atlanta Postal CU and Delta Community CU staff

A key factor to the efforts of Advocacy success for any industry is tied to having strong relationships with legislators. But this is not something one can just do once and check off the list … these relationships are built over years of interactions and connections. A shared understanding over time! Two great examples of these relationships were seen in the past week:

  • On September 10th Atlanta Postal CU and Delta Community CU sat down with Sen. Matt Brass (R-Newnan) for an in-district meeting in Palmetto, GA. This is the third year in a row that these credit unions have engaged with Sen. Brass, and they have developed a unique personal connection with the legislator. Sen. Brass serves as Vice Chairman of two committees of interest to credit unions, Regulated Industries as well as Economic Development, and has been consistently open to the industry. Regardless where things stand on an issue, he is always willing to discuss thanks in large part to the consistent positive meetings by credit unions over the years. Our thanks to these two credit unions, as well as Georgia Power Northwest CU, which met with him in the first year as well!
  • On September 8th, North Georgia CU was engaged at a political event for Rep. Alan Powell (R-Hartwell) in the district in Hartwell, GA; they have consistently engaged with him in the district for years, with several personal relationships developed between the credit union and Rep. Powell. Rep. Powell serves on multiple committees of note for credit unions: Rules, Motor Vehicles (which has consistently addressed bills on the towing industry), and he serves as the Chairman of the Regulated Industries Committee. He has been always willing to discuss the issues and has amended bills to help protect credit unions over the year. Our thanks to North Georgia CU for building such a positive relationship!
