Much like the Steve McQueen horror film about a growing blob of extraterrestrial goo, the key to strong advocacy for credit unions is continual, systematic and ever-expanding legislative connections! These legislative relationships aren’t built, however, from outer-space – but rather built on time, trust and regular interaction. The most recent examples of these interactions was seen on October 9th when GEMC FCU represented the industry at an in-district political event for state Rep. Terry England (R-Auburn). Rep. England is the chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee and has been a positive force for credit unions with his openness in discussing the issues that impact the industry, and this in-district interaction helps continue growing the relationship. A connection to the industry does not happen overnight, but is created through the regular interactions of credit unions. Credit unions engage with legislators in a variety of ways, whether like the above, or participating at Hike the Hill events in D.C., or local in-district Hike at Home meetings. However, one of the easiest methods is to personally connect with your area legislators – invite them to your grand openings or special events at the credit union (or to a chapter meeting). By doing so you can help grow the understanding and awareness of the industry, and strengthen the grassroots connections!
