Creating Influence

Credit Union Efforts: Growing the Level of Influence

The importance of legislators to know the credit unions in their district, and understand their unique legislative needs, can be the difference on any bill in Congress or in the Georgia legislature. And given the large range of issues that are tacked on a state and federal level that could drastically impact how your credit union serves its members, it is an effort well worth the time! As such, credit unions in Georgia have consistently engaged with legislators to grow the level of understanding among the elected leaders, and grow the level of influence the industry has. Building relationships with elected leaders, veteran legislators as well as newly elected officials, is an effort important for the long-term success of credit unions. And connections can happen in a variety of ways; the most recent efforts of credit unions include:

  • On October 31st, Platinum Federal Credit Union participated in the in-district event for state Rep. Terry England (R-Auburn). This is a prime example of how a new connection is created – by engaging locally and being visible to the legislator. Given that Rep. England is the chairman of the powerful Budget Committee in the House, it’s a key connection to make. Our thanks to Platinum FCU CEO Kabir Laiwalla for engaging with Rep. England to grow the connection for the industry!
  • On November 6th, Robins Financial Credit Union participated in the in-district event for state Rep. Shaw Blackmon (R-Bonaire). Rep. Blackmon had existing ties to the credit union prior his election, and Robins Financial CU SRVP Christina O’Brien serves as his campaign treasurer. And given Rep. Blackmon’s quick growth within the leadership of the House Ways and Means Committee (the committee that addresses all tax bills), it is a strong existing connection that has benefited the industry. Our thanks to Robins Financial CU CEO John Rhea and his team for their consistent engagement with this legislator, and all their elected officials!

These personal connections with legislators can make the difference in any bill, and are the key component in advancing advocacy further down the road.
