Advocacy-Focused Chapter Meeting Highlighting Top Legislative Issues for Credit Unions

On May 8th the Mountain Empire Chapter held an advocacy-focused meeting to illustrate the top legislative issues for credit unions on the state level, and what the industry can to do help shape their future. Attendees were provided the overview of the state session where the group delved into the bills addressed in the state Legislature, with an overview of the top 10 wins for credit unions (and a rundown of the top 55 bills). Credit unions were provided the six tips to successfully advocating for issues, and what the industry does to help shape the bills that impact how you serve your members. Our thanks to the chapter for utilizing their quarterly meeting to provide an avenue to educate staff and board on the legislative issues that were addressed in the 2018 state session!

The Governor recently signed many of the bills addressed for the industry into law; of key interest to credit unions was the priority bill containing many credit union charter enhancements, which was lobbied heavily throughout the session. And, while it’s not in the top 55 (or in the more than 500 bills addressed for credit unions), there’s a bill that was just signed into law that your employees may need to be aware of it they aren’t already – the distracted driving bill. Here is an excellent article for what’s allowed and what’s not in the car going forward in Georgia. The key change to know is that one cannot have the phone against your face and drive (including being stopped at a light), with all calls now required to be through Bluetooth or with an earpiece.
