What’s Happening in Washington, D.C. (Beyond the Shutdown)

While the federal government shutdown has consumed almost all of the attention in Washington, D.C., (including here in Georgia with the much-publicized delay challenges at the airports), there have been a few changes involving Georgia’s congressional delegation of interest to credit unions:

  • Rep. Drew Ferguson (R-3) has won a spot on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, and joins Georgia Congressman Rep. John Lewis (D-5) to represent the state on this powerful committee. Both of these individuals understand credit unions and the role they play in helping people afford life.
  • And while he is no longer chairman due to the change in power of the U.S. House, Rep. Tom Graves (R-14) is the Republican leader of the Financial Services Subcommittee of Appropriations. His presence on this subcommittee is helpful to credit unions with the issues that arise.

Having legislators from your state on key committees is invaluable in helping shape the issues as they unfold in Washington, D.C. Georgia is fortunate to also have two members on the House Financial Services Committee, (Rep. David Scott (D-13) and Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-11), and one member of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee (Sen. David Perdue-R); both of these committees address many of the bills of note to the industry. And, a member of the powerful House Rules Committee (Rep. Rob Woodall (R-7)) that controls what bills will come to the floor for a vote! Please take a moment to reach out to each of these seven legislators on key committees to thank them for their time representing the state.
