Hike at Home Meeting with State Representative to Grow Connection

On August 1st credit unions sat down with state Rep. Houston Gaines (R-Athens) in the district to help create a positive connection for the industry at a “hike at home” meeting. Rep. Gaines is in his first year with the Georgia Legislature, and in the course of the state session he was engaged to help educate on the unintended consequences on a bill that would have increased compliance burdens on credit unions (elder abuse reporting expansion found in HB 402). He was very receptive to credit union concerns and did not move it forward during the 2019 session. This meeting was sought to help share information on the industry and build a solid connection with him now for the future.

Never been on a “hike at home” meeting? These meetings are held to grow positive relationships between credit unions and legislators, are much more laid back and relaxed than those held during the course of the state legislative session, and are a great way to create open dialogue. Take advantage of the opportunities when they arise in your part of the state; early time spent with new legislators can help pave a positive environment for the entire industry. Thank you to the credit unions that met with Rep. Gaines to grow a positive relationship: First Reliance Federal Credit Union, Georgia United Credit Union, Peach State Federal Credit Union, Powerco Federal Credit Union, and Robins Financial Credit Union. We appreciate you representing all credit unions and creating a personal connection that can help in advocacy efforts for years to come!
