Georgia’s Whirlwind General Elections: A Credit Union Perspective

Georgia’s elections were stretched out beyond the normal “day after” results with multiple recounts, provisional ballots, and media frenzy that surrounded several high-profile races up until as late as last week! And if you don’t have election fatigue yet, there are races still under way, as they shifted into a runoff that will be held on December 4th, including the race for the open seat for Secretary of State between former U.S. Congressman John Barrow (D) and former state Rep. Brad Raffensberger.

But for those races that have been decided, the general elections saw 112 out of the 258 state and federal races with competition. And while most incumbents won, the key takeaways from these races were the importance of getting out the vote, the increased competitiveness of districts in areas of the state, and the power of multiple competitive open statewide seats playing across down-ballot races. And never forget the importance of credit union get-out-the-vote efforts – they matter. These midterm elections saw a marked increase in voter turnout as 57 percent of registered voters cast ballots, up significantly from the May primary in which only 18 percent voted.
