Creating Influence

Expanding Connections: Credit Unions Involved in Election Activity

The 2018 election season is in full swing, with the various Congressional and statewide races receiving the bulk of the media attention in Georgia. However, all 236 state legislative seats are up as well, with more than 80 of these with competition in the primary. As such there has been work under way to engage with both federal and state legislators leading up to the May 22nd primary, and credit unions have been involved (or planning to volunteer) in several campaigns. The most recent efforts of credit unions include:

  • On the evening of April 16th North Georgia Credit Union CEO Brian Akin joined GCUA at an in-district event in Toccoa for State Rep. Dan Gasaway (R-Homer). Akin has created a relationship with Rep. Gasaway from his first year in office in 2013, and this relationship has been positive for the industry as Rep. Gasaway has consistently been open on the issues that matter to credit unions.

Relationships like this help expand the level of influence for the industry, and Georgia credit unions have been actively growing connections with elected leaders – veteran legislators as well as newly elected officials. These efforts create a greater understanding of credit unions for the legislators – please take advantage of opportunities to engage when they arise!
