Election Year Efforts and Resources: Credit Union Activity

Credit unions in Georgia have already made a positive impact on the 2018 elections in a variety of avenues: providing hands-on election assistance to candidates, connecting credit union leaders at political events in the district, and encouraging voter turnout. If your credit union hasn’t engaged yet in encouraging staff, board and members to vote yet, there is still time and several easy ways to do so through ElectionWatch (the nonpartisan get-out-the-vote website created for Georgia).

In addition to the get-out-the-vote efforts, each race in the elections was analyzed, with those candidates with challenging races that have connections with our industry identified to provide credit union coordinated help to make a difference. Credit unions and GCUA were engaged in this type of coordinated physical campaign activity back in May for the primary to provide “boots on the ground” help to candidates. For the November general elections, there are several credit unions teeing up support for two phone bank nights later this month, and a yard-sign deployment effort that has already taken place for state Rep. Megan Hanson (R-Brookhaven).

Rep. Hanson was elected in the fall of 2016, and she quickly became a strong asset to credit unions. She has been instrumental on several issues that matter to credit unions ranging from bills on operations, lending, and the hard-fought credit union priority bill that addressed board member liability in Georgia. In her first year she connected with credit unions in and around her district to learn more about the industry, and she has been helpful to the issues pursued for credit unions. This seat is in one of the most historically competitive districts in the state, and with this being her first re-election attempt, timing of this credit union yard-sign deployment was instrumental. Our thanks to all who reached out to their staff to procure yards for signs around the Brookhaven area!
