Creating Influence

Building Relationships with Legislators

Building relationships with elected leaders – veteran legislators as well as newly elected officials – is an effort important for the long-term success of credit unions. In doing so, these efforts create a greater understanding of credit unions for the legislators, and helps grow the legislative influence of the industry. These simple, yet powerful connections can help shape opportunities the industry has in the ability to provide financial services to members – and at times, to be able to continue to do so! How? These personal connections with legislators can make the difference in any bill, and are the key component in advancing advocacy further down the road. Our thanks to all the credit unions who engage in this effort regularly, whether at Hike the Hill, Hikes at Home, engaging in campaign activities, inviting legislators to visit branches for tours, and engaging personally to create a relationship with a legislator. The most recent efforts of credit unions include:

  • On October 2nd, North Georgia Credit Union participated in the in-district event with state Rep. Alan Powell (R-Hartwell), something they have done for the past several years as they have a strong relationship with Rep. Powell. This is a key connection, as Rep. Powell is the chairman of the Regulated Industries committee and an active member of the Motor Vehicles committee; both often tackle issues of credit union interest.
  • On October 5th Coosa Valley Credit Union participated in the in-district event for state Rep. Trey Kelley (R-Cedartown). This is a strong existing connection that has benefited the industry, as Rep. Kelley serves on multiple committees of importance to credit unions – the House Banking, House Judiciary, and House Ways and Means committees.
  • And as of press time on October 13th Health Center Credit Union and Augusta VAH FCU are participating in an event for state Rep. Jodi Lott (R-Evans). This is the opportunity to create a new relationship, with this being Rep. Lott’s first legislative term. Connecting her with local credit union individuals places an in-district face on the industry, an asset in any lobbying effort!
