Creating Influence

Be Involved: Credit Unions Proactively Engaging for 2018 Elections

Elections are right around the corner with several special elections already slated this year for November 7th, and then all of the U.S. Representative seats, Georgia’s statewide offices (including the race for governor), and all of the 236 state legislative seats up for election next year, with the primary set for May 22nd. Credit unions can and do make an impact in elections by getting involved. Why should your credit union get involved with campaigns and elections? Engaging with candidates through physical campaign support is powerful as it develops strong relationships with elected officials, as well as helps support credit union supporters – it grows legislative influence for the entire industry.

Credit unions around the state continue to be proactively engaged with candidates to build relationships and help advance the industry. The most recent efforts include:

  • On September 18th Coosa Valley CU participated in the in-district fundraiser for state Rep. John Meadows (R-Calhoun). Rep. Meadows is the chairman of the powerful Rules Committee in the House, and as such he has direct control of whether a bill is selected for a vote (and controls their fate). Our thanks to Coosa Valley CU leadership for engaging with Rep. Meadows for the second consecutive year, building a consistent credit union connection!
  • On September 25th Robins Financial CU engaged at an in-state event for U.S. Representative Austin Scott (R-8) before he returned to Washington, D.C. During his speech, Rep. Scott referenced credit unions specifically on the topic of data breach impact to the rest of the attendees. Building this type of understanding of the issues is something that happens slowly and systematically, with multiple touchpoints by credit unions. Our thanks to Robins Financial CU for being in front of the Congressman consistently!

Whether it’s in-district political events, physical campaign efforts, or hosting a legislator at a branch for a tour, please take advantage of the opportunities to engage in campaign activity with your credit union. The act of helping pro-credit union candidates get elected (or re-elected) is an investment in your members!
